Furman University’s Greg Springsteen, professor of chemistry, joined Mike Switzer on South Carolina Public Radio show “South Carolina Business Review.” The 2024 recipient of the South Carolina Governors Award for Excellence in Research, Springsteen spoke with Switzer about his investigation of metabolism and his theories about how life on primordial Earth began. Springsteen underscored the importance of undergraduate research and pointed out that while Furman’s work evolves at a slower pace than at R1 institution labs, the environment at Furman lends itself well to exploring big scientific questions. He said students at primarily undergraduate universities, like Furman, do a “fantastic job” of understanding the fundamental concepts in science behind metabolism and life.
