In an article appearing in The New York Times about the influx of conservatives from blue states to traditionally red state South Carolina, a study conducted by Furman University is mentioned. The 2023 research led by Ken Kolb, chair and professor of sociology, and staff members of The Shi Institute for Sustainable Communities found that Greenville has seen a 22 percent decline in its Black population since 1990, while the city’s total population has grown by about 21 percent.
