WYFF News 4 turned to Furman University’s Brent Nelsen for comment following Nikki Haley’s announcement that she will enter the fray for the 2024 presidential election. The Jane Fishburne Hipp Professor of Politics and International Affairs, Nelsen said Haley will have to garner support from more conservative Republicans, while also distancing herself from Trump. “Nikki Haley is going to have to prove that she can overcome some of the challenges she has running against a well-known person like Donald Trump,” he said. “Because of her background, because of her gubernatorial experience, because of her foreign policy experience, she probably has a resume that resonates somewhat better with the Republican electorate. She’s probably the first South Carolinian in quite a while to have a real shot at being president,” Nelsen added.
