Furman University’s Brent Nelsen, a politics and international affairs professor, spoke to WYFF News 4 about Francis Suarez and his bid for the Republican nomination in the 2024 presidential election. Suarez, Cuban-born mayor of Miami, believes he can sway voters for the GOP. But Nelsen said it will be an uphill battle for the candidate. “He’s going to have to run in South Carolina like any Republican,” he said. “He will have to energize the base. He will have to spend a lot of time in the Upstate, build some of those bridges he talks about in Charleston and in that first congressional district and try to make some headway there. But I think it’s going to be tough,” Nelsen added.
