Furman University’s Brent Nelsen spoke with FOX Carolina News’ Justin Dougherty about a lengthy phone conversation on Tuesday between President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin. Nelsen, the Jane Fishburne Hipp Professor of Politics and International Affairs, said the two-hour call was important for imposing a 30-day ceasefire for Russian attacks on Ukraine’s energy infrastructure, but progress beyond that is in question. Nelsen said the main issues between the countries center around additional land for Russia and lasting security guarantees for Ukraine, and from whom those guarantees will come. Nelsen believes an agreement in the near future is not forthcoming.
