Menzer gives back to veterans with the gift of swim

Furman’s Melinda Menzer, professor and chair of the Department of English, is spending her summer poolside. But not in the way that might first come to mind. Menzer is a volunteer coach for the Upstate Veteran Swim program at the Greenville County Aquatic Complex. FOX Carolina interviewed Menzer during one of her coaching sessions. “When you work with someone in the water, when you are swimming together, when you’re talking about swimming, you really get to know people,” Menzer said. “I’ve learned so much from them. I really admire them coming to swim as adults – sometimes with some real impediments in their lives, and they’re here in the middle of the day making it happen.”
