Furman University’s Ken Kolb pens an article about the work of river pilots in the age of automation in 64 Parishes, a project of the Louisiana Endowment for the Humanities. In his article, “Against the Current,” Kolb, chair of the Sociology Department at Furman, writes about the benefits automation has brought to the world of modern shipping and explains how the human side of the equation is just as essential.
