Gregg Hecimovich, a professor of English at Furman University, appeared on “CBS Saturday Morning” to talk about his new book, “The Life and Times of Hannah Crafts: The True Story of the Bondwoman’s Narrative.” Host Michelle Miller spoke with Hecimovich about what led him to write the book and the decades-long research that he invested in it, including poring over forensic data, letters, photos and other documents from attics and archives. Through his research, he revealed the identity of the author of “The Bondwoman’s Narrative,” the first novel written by a Black female in the mid-19th century and published by Henry Louis Gates Jr. in 2002.
