Gregg Hecimovich’s “The Life and Times of Hannah Crafts: The True Story of the Bondwoman’s Narrative” (Ecco) is set for release Oct. 17. Jennifer Schuessler explores the work by the Furman University English professor in piece she wrote for The New York Times.

In the article, “Searching for America’s First Black Woman Novelist,” Schuessler describes how Hecimovich knits together Hannah Crafts’s story and her escape from slavery based on a manuscript that was lost for more than 150 years. In an event celebrating the book, Hecimovich will be in conversation with Greenville Poet Laureate Glenis Redmond Monday, Oct. 30, 5:30-7 p.m. at M. Judson Booksellers in downtown Greenville.
