Greenville Journal spotlights Furman’s bicentennial kickoff
Jay King of Greenville Journal wrote an extensive piece about Furman University’s 200-year anniversary, which officially opened with a convocation and other events Thursday, Feb. 12. He noted comments from President Elizabeth Davis, President Emeritus David Shi ’73 and alumnus Regenald Garrett ’98, senior pastor at Jubilee Baptist Church, all of whom recounted pivotal and often uncomfortable moments in Furman’s history.
“But 200 years teaches us hard times call for courage, fracture calls for building community,” Davis said. “Furman is and will be a place where students learn how to think, not what to think, where they practice listening to perspectives that challenge their own (and) where they discover discomfort isn’t danger and disagreement isn’t disrespect.”
