Gen. Joshua Rudd, a 1993 Furman University political science alumnus, was confirmed by the United States Senate on March 10 to serve as head of both U.S. Cyber Command and the National Security Agency. Rudd fills a post that had been vacant since last April.

Rudd was elevated to the rank of general and is the first 4-star general in Furman alumni history. The news was featured in Politico, The Washington Post, Reuters, UPI News (via MSN News) and AXIOS, among other sources.

Rudd received his commission as second lieutenant through Furman’s ROTC program. He completed numerous courses, combat missions and has held several command posts on his way to his current role and rank as general. They include Special Forces Assessment and Selection, graduating in 1999 from the Special Forces Qualification Course; the Army Ranger Course; Military Free Fall Jumpmaster course; and Combat Diver Qualification Course at the Special Forces Underwater Operations School.

Rudd has deployed in support of multiple combat operations including Operation Enduring Freedom and Operation Iraqi Freedom.

Among his many command and staff assignments, Rudd most recently served as chief of staff of the United States Indo-Pacific Command, then deputy commander of the United States Indo-Pacific Command.

In addition to his bachelor’s degree from Furman, Rudd holds a Master of Arts degree in national security and strategic studies from the Naval War College. He is a graduate of the Naval Command and Staff College, Infantry Officer Advanced Course and United States Army War College.
