Furman University raises nearly $1.5 million on Giving Tuesday
On December 3, 460 donors gave $1,442,358 during Furman’s 12th-annual partnership with Giving Tuesday. To celebrate this international day of philanthropy, donors were encouraged to support five scholarship funds: the Academic Scholarship Fund, the Paladin Scholarship Fund, the Furman United Scholarship Fund, the Research and Internships Scholarship Fund and the Study Away Scholarship Fund.
“These gifts from our generous Furman community fund critical scholarships and experiences like student internships, study away and research,” said Shon Herrick, interim vice president for development. “We are deeply grateful that they value The Furman Advantage. Their gifts will help create opportunities for others to experience everything Furman offers.”
According to John Pezdek, director of annual giving, the figures include a $1 million scholarship gift making this year one of the most successful Giving Tuesday efforts in recent memory.
“The generosity seen throughout Giving Tuesday supports Furman’s top philanthropic priorities, advances its mission and empowers our students to be agents of inspiration, leadership and change in their communities,” he said.
Contributions ranged from about a dozen large gifts to hundreds of donations of $100 or less, Pezdek said. When combined they create a powerful impact for all students and across the university.
The majority of donors supported the Academic Scholarship Fund, which ensures Furman can continue to support exceptional students.
“Giving Tuesday donors can feel proud that they contributed to making The Furman Advantage accessible to students regardless of their financial circumstances,” Pezdek said.
