It’s bracket season, and per tradition, Furman University mathematics professors Liz Bouzarth, John Harris and Kevin Hutson have been busy helping develop a March Madness model, Slingshot, that predicts upsets in the NCAA tournament. An article in The Athletic by Peter Keating and Jordan Brenner explains why style of play, chaos, “cluster collisions” and more impact the ever-evolving model and tourney outcomes.

In other pieces appearing in The Athletic, Keating and Brenner, aka Bracket Busters, pick the 10 most likely first-round upsets in the men’s tourney and the 10 most likely first-round “stunners” in the women’s tournament.

A subscription to The Athletic or The New York Times is required to view the content. Furman ID holders may access the articles through databases located at Furman University Libraries.
