Furman is keeping an eye on Debby

FINAL UPDATE Thursday, Aug. 8, 8:45 a.m. —  The National Weather Service says wind gusts of 25 to 40 mph are possible over the Greenville area until this afternoon, and we expect a small amount of rain, but campus and the Upstate are not included in wind or flood advisories. The storm is expected to move north of the Carolina by Friday morning. Furman University Police will continue to monitor the situation. We will post another update only if forecast or condition changes indicate an increased the threat to campus.

UPDATE Wednesday, Aug. 7, 10 a.m. —  The sun is shining on campus this morning. It never rained yesterday and today’s chance of precipitation is low. There’s still a higher chance tomorrow and Friday, but the heaviest rain will be east of Greenville. The area of South Carolina that’s received heavy rainfall is at least two hours from the Upstate. UPDATE Tuesday, Aug. 6, 9 a.m. — Rain is expected in the Upstate of South Carolina this afternoon. Heaviest rainfalls from Debby are expected 100 miles east of campus along and east of Interstate 77. Heavier rain will fall in the Upstate on Thursday and Friday, with totals around 1.5 inch.

Aug. 5, 12:03 p.m. — The Greenville area, including the Furman University campus, might experience heavy rain and gusty winds later this week as the remnants of Hurricane Debby passes through the area. Debby made landfall in Florida’s Big Bend area early Monday and was later downgraded to a tropical storm. If the center of the storm tracks toward the Upstate of South Carolina, it will create threats of excessive rainfall and flooding.
