The Furman University Department of Music’s Sarah Reese Lyric Theatre will present “Street Scene,” an English-language opera by Kurt Weill. Shows run Friday, April 24, at 7:30 p.m. and Sunday, April 26, at 2 p.m. in McAlister Auditorium. The production is open to the public. Tickets are $10-$20. Furman students are admitted free with valid ID.

Set over the course of two sweltering summer days on a New York City tenement stoop, the opera portrays the lives, struggles and aspirations of immigrant working-class families living side by side in an urban community.

Often described as a “Broadway opera,” “Street Scene” uniquely blends operatic technique with jazz, blues and American popular song, creating a vivid and distinctly American musical language. The work is based on Elmer Rice’s Pulitzer Prize-winning 1929 play of the same name, with lyrics by Langston Hughes. Together, these artists crafted a powerful portrait of American life—one that captures both the tensions and hopes of a diverse community and remains deeply relevant today.

Furman’s Grant Knox directs the Sarah Reese Lyric Theatre.
