Furman University’s Kailash Khandke, an economics professor, has written an opinion piece in Greenville Business Magazine. In it, he draws comparisons of our COVID-19 times to the Great Depression and the Great Recession and makes a case for federal intervention that reaches beyond individual stimulus checks and the Paycheck Protection Program. In addition to these short-term measures, Khandke says our state is in need of federal assistance programs that address alternative transportation networks, an expansion of South Carolina’s port, cleanup of federal lands and hazardous waste sites, and broadband access for all South Carolinians – measures that will reap benefits for decades to come.
