For three days in May, 29 Furman students got a taste of the Big Apple during two New York City Paladin Career Treks organized by the Malone Center for Career Engagement.

Treks are opportunities for students to explore industries, organizations and careers at top companies across the nation, as well as make new professional contacts. One of the recent treks focused on the finance field, while the other concentrated on media and communications.

“Paladin Career Treks are one of the best ways for students to investigate firsthand why a particular company, job or city is pursuable after graduation,” said Steve Hairston, assistant director of the Malone Center. “Often, students have impressions of what the future may hold, and this experience provides further insight into their potential first occupation.”

The 13 students on the Media and Communications Career Trek visited U.S. News and World Report, Gladstone Place Partners and Maslansky + Partners, while the 15 students on the Finance Career Trek toured Mitsubishi UFJ Financial Group and Bank of America. The entire Furman group, which included one student ambassador, Hairston, Malone Center career advisors Alex Ricciuti and Rebecca Marion-Flesch, and professors Jason Jones and Eunice Kim, also visited the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum and networked with alumni at a mixer.

“We hope students walk away from Treks more informed and confident in considering their post-graduation plans,” said Hairston. “Another advantage of participating in these experiences is the opportunity to grow their network of alumni and professionals.”

“I am from New York, so it was a no-brainer for me,” said Nick Vicinanza ’24, a double major in Spanish and business. “An opportunity to meet some successful Paladins, network and explore NYC – who wouldn’t want to go?”
