Alexander Stubb to run for Finnish president

Former Prime Minister of Finland Alexander Stubb, a 1993 Furman University alumnus, will run in Finland’s 2024 presidential race as the National Coalition Party nominee according to stories from the Associated Press, Politico and Reuters. Stubb, who served as prime minister 2014-2015, has also served the nation as finance minister, foreign minister, trade and Europe minister, and as a member of the Finnish Parliament. Stubb was a member of the European Parliament from 2004-2008 and served in the national government from 2008-2016.

He holds a Ph.D. from the London School of Economics and Political Science and has a master’s degree from the College of Europe in Bruges. He also studied at the Sorbonne in Paris. He delivered the 2017 commencement address at Furman where he received an honorary Doctor of Philosophy degree. Stubb is currently a professor and director of the European University Institute in Florence, Italy.
