A Season Like No Other

On a spring evening in Hilton Head, South Carolina, the announcement carried a significance that extended far beyond a trophy presentation.

For decades, Furman Athletics has built a reputation for excellence – developing championship teams, preparing student-athletes for success and representing the university with distinction on regional and national stages. But in 2025-26, the Paladins accomplished something no Furman athletics program had done before.

For the first time in university history, Furman captured both the Southern Conference Commissioner’s Cup and the Germann Cup in the same year – a rare achievement that recognized the collective strength of the university’s men’s and women’s athletics programs. The Commissioner’s Cup honors the conference’s top men’s athletics
program, while the Germann Cup recognizes the league’s best women’s athletics program.

The historic sweep was not defined by one team, one championship or one moment. It was built across an entire department. From soccer fields to cross-country courses, on basketball courts and golf courses, in classrooms and community spaces, the foundation is strengthened through the dedication of hundreds of student-athletes, coaches and staff members committed to a shared vision of excellence.

“This achievement is a powerful reflection of the collective strength of Furman Athletics and the remarkable consistency of success across our men’s and women’s programs,” says Jason Donnelly, Furman’s vice president for intercollegiate athletics. “To earn both the Southern Conference Commissioner’s Cup and Germann Cup speaks to the outstanding leadership of our coaches, the commitment and talent of our student-athletes and the collaborative culture that defines the Paladins.”

The achievement was yet another milestone in Furman’s remarkable Southern Conference history. The Paladins have now won the Commissioner’s Cup three times overall – the most among the league’s private institutions – while Furman’s women have claimed the Germann Cup 18 times, the highest total of any conference member.

But the numbers tell only part of the story.

The 2025-26 season represented the kind of broad-based success that athletic departments strive to achieve. Furman finished first among Southern Conference institutions in the Learfield Directors’ Cup standings, a national measurement of overall athletic success across all sports.

The Paladins’ men’s programs set the pace with historic performances across multiple sports. Men’s soccer delivered one of the most memorable seasons in program history, winning both the regular-season and tournament championships before advancing to the College Cup – college soccer’s national semifinal round – for the first time.

Men’s basketball continued its recent rise as one of the nation’s premier mid-major programs, capturing the Southern Conference Tournament championship with a 77-61
victory over East Tennessee State and earning its second NCAA Tournament appearance in four seasons. Men’s cross-country added another championship chapter, extending its remarkable run with a 13th consecutive Southern Conference Tournament title.

The success was just as impressive across Furman’s women’s programs. Women’s cross- country continued its dominance, women’s tennis captured a regular-season championship and women’s golf won the Southern Conference Tournament title to secure a spot in the NCAA Tournament.

Together, those accomplishments created the foundation for a season unlike any other.

“This is a testament to the dedication of our student-athletes and to the exceptional leadership of our coaches and support staff,” Donnelly says. “Our student-athletes continue to excel in the classroom, in competition and throughout the Furman community.”

That commitment to excellence extends well beyond the scoreboard. At Furman, athletics is built around the belief that student-athletes should be challenged to succeed in every aspect of their lives – as competitors, scholars and leaders. The department continues to produce outstanding academic outcomes, with student-athletes earning strong graduation rates and developing the skills necessary for success long after their playing careers end.

The university’s investment in the student-athlete experience has grown alongside its competitive success. The transformation of Timmons Arena represents a significant commitment to Furman’s future, creating a modern environment designed to support student-athletes, coaches and fans while enhancing the overall Paladin experience.

The arena project, along with other facility enhancements across campus, is about more than improved spaces. It reflects a belief that providing the right resources helps student-athletes reach their full potential – in competition, academics and leadership.

That same belief has inspired continued support from alumni, donors and friends of Furman, whose investments have strengthened scholarships, facilities and opportunities for student-athletes.

“Perhaps most importantly, our success reflects the strength of our entire Furman community,” Donnelly says.

For a university that has claimed 260 Southern Conference championships since joining the league in 1936 and produced more NCAA Tournament appearances than any current or former conference member, success has long been part of the Furman story.

The 2025-26 season, however, added a defining new chapter.

Winning both the Commissioner’s Cup and Germann Cup was more than a historic achievement. It showcases what happens when a community invests in excellence, believes in its student-athletes and works together toward a common goal.

And for Furman Athletics, it was not the conclusion of a remarkable story.

It was the beginning of what’s to come.
