A short real estate listing appearing in The Post and Courier – Greenville comes with a bit of Furman University history. The former home of Charles Judson, the second professor hired by Furman trustees when the school moved from Winnsboro to Greenville, South Carolina, in 1851, is on the market for $1.7 million. Judson Cottage was built prior to 1860, then it was relocated in 1908 (after Judson’s passing) to its current location a couple of blocks south at 522 Cleveland Street in the pricey Alta Vista neighborhood.

Judson Hall, a residence hall on the Furman campus, is named for Charles and his sister, Mary Judson, who helped her brother run the Greenville Woman’s College, previously known as Greenville Baptist Female College, which merged with Furman in the 1930s. Charles Judson served more than 50 years at Furman as professor of mathematics, dean, treasurer, trustee and interim president.
