Blackwell Hall at Furman University first opened its doors to students in 1967. This week, the residence hall named for Gordon Williams Blackwell, Furman’s 8th president, underwent demolition. The housing changes are part of an expansive South Housing project announced by the university in 2022. The newest residence hall at Furman opened in August 2024. Its temporary name, Lakeview Hall, will bear the name of the former Furman president who served from 1965 to 1976. Greenville Journal covered the story as did several local news stations including WYFF News4, WSPA 7News in Spartanburg and FOX Carolina. Reporters spoke with Furman’s Ron Thompson, associate dean of students and director of Housing and Residence Life, about the project and Blackwell’s legacy. Learn more in a Furman News story.
