Furman University’s Brent Nelsen, a regular guest on FOX Carolina, spoke with the station’s Justin Dougherty about the NATO Summit and the Israel-Iran conflict. Nelsen, the Jane Fishburne Hipp Professor of Politics and International Affairs, weighed in on NATO’s defense spending and Finland’s possible role in brokering peace between Ukraine and Russia. Nelsen referenced a question raised by a Finnish reporter who asked President Trump about his ties to Finland President, Alexander Stubb, a Furman alumnus and former student of Nelsen. Nelsen said Finland, while now a member of NATO, serves as a “trusted mediator” between Western and Eastern allies, and Stubb could influence the peace process.

Days after the U.S. strike on Iran, Nelsen was asked about the war in the Middle East. He said the parties need to come together and seek a diplomatic solution or “we’ll go through these cycles of violence.”
