Furman Theatre collaboration with Belflower to hit Broadway
Kimberly Belflower’s “John Proctor is the Villain,” a play resulting from The Farm Theater’s College Collaboration project, will make its debut on Broadway in March 2025. Furman University and two other Southern colleges were selected to work with Belflower on the production, and Furman staged its take on “John Proctor” in 2019 under the direction of Maegan Azar, professor of acting and directing and department chair. The College Collaboration Project is an initiative by The Farm Theater (New York) to help emerging playwrights advance their careers.
“John Proctor is the Villain” leans on Arthur Miller’s “The Crucible” and folds in #MeToo movement themes. Since the very first productions, the comedic drama has been staged on dozens of high school and college campuses and has won acclaim following showings at respected theater houses throughout the U.S.
Enthusiasts of “Stranger Things” will be happy to learn the show will star Sadie Sink who plays Max Mayfield in the popular Netflix series. Tony winner Danya Taymor (“The Outsiders”) will direct the new work, with performances beginning in March at the Booth Theatre. Learn more in Playbill and in The New York Times.
