Welcome
In 2026, we will celebrate Furman’s 200th birthday, and every milestone birthday deserves a big party featuring the celebrant’s favorite foods!
To help celebrate this big event, First Gentleman Charles Davis is asking you to submit your favorite family recipes below to be considered for publication in In the Kitchen with Furman Celebrating 200 Years. Whether it’s Gram’s special cinnamon rolls, Dad’s barbecued ribs, or your own tasty broccoli salad, we want you to share it with your Furman Family.
As part of your submission, please consider including a brief story about how the recipe has become a family favorite or about a special event where the recipe was served. And if your recipe happens to be handwritten by a special family member on a well-worn index card, consider including a photo of that special recipe card.
Submission does not guarantee your recipe will be included in the final published cookbook; however, all submissions will be acknowledged in the cookbook. All unpublished recipes will be available on a website after the cookbook is published.
Use the form below to submit your recipe. You can attach it as a Word document or a picture of a recipe card, or you can enter it directly in the areas provided. If you choose to enter it directly, consider the guidance provided below to facilitate the editing process.
Submission Instructions
Ingredient List instructions
- List ingredients in order of use with each ingredient on a separate line.
- Spell out all measurements (for example, “teaspoon” instead of “tsp.”).
- For mixed fractions use a “–” between the whole number and the fraction (“3-1/2 cups” for three and a half cups)
- Use standard units of measures rather than vague amounts (“16 ounces” or “1 cup” rather than “1 medium can”, although a “pinch of salt” is acceptable).
- If the recipe has different components (for example, a cake with layers, filling, and frosting), separate the ingredient list with headings such as “Cake Layer”, “Filling” and “Frosting”.
- Specify the order of sifting and measuring flour. Use “1 cup flour, sifted” if the flour is measured first and then sifted. Use “1 cup sifted flour” if the flour should be sifted and then measured.
Steps instructions
- Provide clear, detailed step-by-step instructions.
- Separate each step into its own paragraph.
- Indicate the size of bowls, pots, pans, and baking dishes if possible (“In a small mixing bowl…”, “pour into a greased 9×13 pan”)
- For stove-top cooking, indicate the level of heat (“cook over medium heat”).
- As with ingredients, separate the instructions for separate components with headings that match the ingredient list.
- Include any serving instructions at the end of the recipe.
- The last instruction should pertain to storage, if applicable (“Refrigerate cake in a covered container for up to 4 days”).
