All Furman students have primary responsibility for their own safety when traveling internationally, whether or not their travel abroad is funded or sponsored by Furman or is accorded credit by Furman. Furman University strongly encourages its students traveling abroad for educational purposes or other purposes to plan well in advance and to take precautions to ensure safe travel. All travelers should familiarize themselves with political, health, crime, and other safety-related conditions prevailing in any country and specific locations within the country(ies) to be visited. Please review these conditions in the Travel Advisories provided by the U.S. Department of State (DOS). Students should also consider recommendations from the U.S. Center for Disease Control (CDC) Travel Health Notices for their international destination. The CDC Travel Health Notices provide information on health risks such as water, insect, air, and food borne illnesses, recommended routine vaccinations, disease outbreaks, and so on.

All Furman sponsored international student travel has to be registered through the Furman Travel Registry. However, before you register, please check the U.S. Department of State Travel Advisories list to see if your destination will require approval to travel by Furman.

The U.S. Department of State classifies countries around the world on a four-point travel advisory scale:

  • Level 1: Exercise Normal Precautions
  • Level 2: Exercise Increased Caution
  • Level 3: Reconsider Travel
  • Level 4: Do Not Travel

In general, Furman University incorporates this U.S. Department of State information into its official Travel Policy in this way:

  • Level 1: travel is allowed
  • Level 2: travel is allowed
  • Level 3: students and employees must petition Furman University for approval
  • Level 4: travel is not allowed (may petition for an exception when the Level 4 is due to COVID only)
