Meet Tyler: Our Newest Social Media Intern
Introduction
Greetings everyone! I am Tyler Pearson. This semester, I am joining the social media team under the admissions department at Furman University, and I am ecstatic!

To introduce myself, I am a third-year student with a double major in Applied mathematics and Spanish, and a minor in linguistics. I am also the current vice president of the First-Generation Students Alliance (FGSA), the treasurer of FU’s Gospel Ensemble, and a resident assistant in South Housing. I’m usually all over campus due to how demanding my schedule is, but if you don’t see me, I’m either on my hall (McGlothlin 300), in a meeting, in rehearsal, or chatting it up with staff members in the dining hall.
My Time at Furman so Far
I find it auspicious to recount one´s growth over the years, and being a junior in college, I can do so with gratitude because I have gained so much from attending Furman. Furman’s strong reputation as an institution of higher education greatly influenced my desire to attend.
As someone who sought constant intellectual growth, the choice of which university I would go to was clear. The transition from high school to college, however, was not as seamless as I had perceived it to be.
I wanted to be academically challenged during my first year, so I gave myself an intense course-load; however, I had severely underestimated the rigor of college courses and underwent a lot of stress that year. The subsequent year, I learned from my mistakes and managed to thrive in my classes with advice from the Center for Academic Success and my pathways advisor. This was no easy feat to accomplish because not performing as well as I had hoped my freshman year left me in anguish. Nevertheless, I remained resilient and saw the following year as an opportunity to start anew.

Furman Experiences
Since then, my experience at Furman has gotten even better: I have obtained an ardent love for the gospel community here on campus, embarked on two study away programs – one in which I did research in the theme parks of Disney World and the other where I spent the semester in Santiago, Chile studying history and political theory in Spanish – I have done combinatorics research with the math department, built a support system, and acquired novel perspectives of life.
One of the beautiful things I have learned at Furman is that to live is to learn; surrounding oneself in a didactic environment almost indubitably prompts growth of being in all forms if we are receptive to change, and at that moment we are living purposefully.
My Hopes for After Furman
Thus, after undergrad, I would like to continue learning, and living, by attending graduate school. My objective is to obtain a doctorate degree in some field of mathematics. While I have yet to cement my plans after becoming a Doctor of Mathematics, I do know that I would like to someday explore theoretical mathematics in the United Kingdom. I would also like to work in industry as a mathematician, and obtaining a doctorate degree will give me the flexibility to potentially do both.
I look forward to writing more on my Furman experience as the semester progresses. Stay tuned for more blogs, takeovers, and video content coming to you soon!
Signing off,
