Let’s Talk Tag; A Campus-wide Tradition

How To Play:

Let’s talk about tag! And yes, as in the game you played on the playground during recess in elementary school. But lucky for you, we didn’t stop at that! Every year, our Furman University Student Activities Board (FUSAB) hosts a week-long game of campus-wide tag! The game is a campus tradition that is super fun to both watch and participate in. It’s also a great opportunity to get involved and meet new people. The rules are simple, but the game is full of surprises, making it one of my favorite experiences I’ve had at Furman!

At the start of the week, each student who signed up picks up a wristband with a name on it. This name is their target. When you tag your target, you take their wristband, which has a new name written on it. You then try to tag that person, and the cycle continues throughout the week. The goal is to eliminate as many people as possible by tagging them and avoiding being tagged yourself.

You can tag your target almost anywhere, whether you’re walking to class, in the dining hall, or even in your own dorm hall. However, there are a few restrictions on certain buildings at certain times to keep the game fair. For example, some places like the library or academic buildings are off-limits during certain hours. But for the most part, the game is wide open, which keeps everyone on their toes.

More About the Game:

The top three players who manage to tag the most people win cash prizes! First place being $300, second $200, and third $100. The prize incentive really adds to the fun of the game, because people get very competitive. It is so fun to watch players chase each other around and find crazy ways to tag each other! I was even given my best friend as a target this year and had to trick her in order to get her out! Each year, FUSAB also adds a fun theme to make the game even more entertaining. This year, the theme was inspired by Diary of a Wimpy Kid’s “cheese touch.”

Why Do We Play Tag?

Whether you’re a freshman or a senior, everyone is welcome to play, so the game really does bring students on campus together! It’s a great way to get involved on campus and meet others you may not have already crossed paths with. Playing the game also encourages students to step outside of their comfort zones, get a mental break from school work, and have a good time. So, I know that I look forward to playing again next year, and hope that tag is something you can look forward to too!
