Leisure Time at Furman

Life at Furman University is more than studying—it is about creating memorable moments and finding balance through leisure. Here’s a look at how Furman students make the most of their free time.
Walking or Jogging Around the Lake and Campus
Furman’s campus is renowned for its beauty, and there’s no better way to experience it than by walking or jogging around Furman Lake. The iconic Bell Tower rising above the water; the calm spots offer an escape from all the ups and downs of main campus; and the lake loop offers scenic views and a sense of tranquility. For many students, this is the perfect place to clear their minds, whether taking an early morning jog or an afternoon walk with friends. The campus’s well-kept trails and lush landscapes make every walk both exciting and refreshing.
Cycling on the Swamp Rabbit Trail
For those seeking a little more than a walk/jog, the Swamp Rabbit Trail offers an exciting pathway that connects Furman to the wider Greenville area. Grab a bike and follow the trail through woods, parks, and into downtown Greenville. It’s a favorite weekend activity for students who love the thrill of exploration. Whether you’re biking solo or in a group, the Swamp Rabbit Trail offers a great way to see the area beyond campus and makes for a great way to stay active and in shape – for our athletes.
Library Patio Relaxation with Friends
The library patio is one of Furman’s several gems. It offers a cozy seating and views of the beautiful campus grounds, and it is the perfect place to meet friends, share coffee, or unwind after a study session. Many students spend their afternoons on the patio, catching up with friends, chatting about classes, working on group projects, or simply enjoying the sun. This spot becomes a little oasis where friendships are strengthened, and the stresses of the day fade away.
Cooking and Group Meals in the Upperclassmen Apartments
As students progress to upperclassmen housing, many enjoy the added perk of apartment living—complete with kitchens. In the apartments, students enjoy cooking with friends, and gathering for group meals turns into a treasured tradition. Cooking lovers tend to be able to try out new recipes to host potlucks, and these shared meals bring students together in a home-like environment. The laughter, food, and community spirit that fill these apartments make them a beloved part of the Furman experience for juniors and seniors.
Vocational Reflection with the Furman Cothran Center
For those seeking meaningful reflection and guidance, the Cothran Center offers powerful vocational programs and retreats. This fall, students joined a retreat that saw them first go to Bald Rock, where they enjoyed the quiet beauty of nature and bonded as a group. From there, they traveled to a nearby inn, where they spent time listening to stories from graduating seniors, each sharing experiences and advice that were both inspiring and grounding. It was a weekend of connection, reflection, camaraderie, and a time to reflect on their own journeys ahead as well.
Finding Balance and Connection
At Furman, leisure time is about enriching life, connecting with others, and growing both personally and professionally. It could be through an early morning walk, an evening meal with friends, or a reflective retreat, and Furman students find ways to balance the demands of academics with the joys of campus life.
