Starting college is a big step for anyone, but for first-generation students, it can feel like stepping into completely new territory. At Furman, we’re proud of the students who take that leap and pave the way for others to follow. Meet Sophia Sherwood, a first-generation college student who has discovered community, confidence, and support during her time at Furman. In this post, Sophia shares five things she wishes she knew before starting her college journey. These insights might help future first-gen Paladins feel a little more at home from day one.
I was nervous to go to college. Being a first-generation student meant I was doing something new, something my parents hadn’t done before and couldn’t give me advice about. Looking back, here are five things I wish I knew about being a first-generation student:
