Math & the Mouse & Notable Programs

Last updated January 6, 2022

By Camiell Foulger

Our department offers several noteworthy, unique programs during the academic year, in addition to a special Maymester program. We believe in exposing our students to a variety of ideas, fields, and contemporary research topics.

Math & the Mouse

One of our most notable programs is Math & the Mouse, a May Experience that takes place in Disney World.

The course is project-driven. Students complete major group projects, give presentations, and pursue their own interests during the three week course. Students must have completed MTH-141, 145, 150, or an equivalent in order to apply. In order to learn more, reach out to Dr. BouzarthDr. Harris, or Dr. Hutson.

Clanton Lecture Series

Every fall, a top mathematician visits our department and presents on a series of different themes. View our past visiting mathematicians.

Carolinas Sports Analytics Meetings

This program began in 2013, providing a space for faculty and students to explore sport statistics. In the inaugural year, topics included:

  • “Sports’ Most Unassailable Record”
  • “Diamonds in the Rough: An Enhanced Rating System for MLB Batters and Pitchers”
  • “Boxing in Basketball: What Factors Affect the Outcome in a College Basketball Game?”

While COVID-19 prevented recent meetings, check back on the page for Carolinas Sports Analytics Meetings for updates.

Wylie Mathematics Tournament

The tournament is a one-day event meant to inspire students to study mathematics. High school students who are passionate about mathematics should register. Registration is free! Participants only need to pay for lunch and transportation.

The deadline to register for this year’s competition is March 4th, 2022. Due to rising COVID-19 rates, this year the tournament will not be held in person.
