Dr. Hartley joined Furman University in 2026. He brings over a decade of experience in higher education with a range of areas of interest. At his most recent post, he taught a variety of marketing courses as well as Global Business and served as the faculty sponsor for The Entrepreneur Network student organization on campus. He has experience in designing and launching ventures both in the private sector and within the higher education and public landscapes. Hartley’s industry background primarily involves sales, sales management and marketing roles in both the domestic and international settings. Furthermore, his consulting experience includes clients ranging from non-academic, on-campus organizations to local-level start-ups, to large multi-national corporations. Dr. Phillip Hartley earned his Ph.D. in marketing with a concentration in consumer behavior and a minor in management from Louisiana State University and completed his MBA in International Business and BS in marketing and finance while minoring in sociology both at the University of South Carolina. He is a proud husband and father. In their free time, he and his family enjoy travel, good food, good music and time in the outdoors.

Research Interests

Dr. Hartley's research interests span and merge marketing, international business and entrepreneurship with pedagogical concepts and the influence of culture as recurring topics of focus. He has published in outlets such as Journal of Marketing Communication, Journal of Marketing Education and Journal of International Business Education, and he has presented his research at marketing, international business and entrepreneurship conferences. More specific conceptual interests include psychological ownership, student learning outcomes, and geopolitical effects on consumer behavior.
