A strong advocate for children, Leighan was a professor of education at Palm Beach Atlantic College, a national presenter and author in the field of early childhood education and administration.  She is the founder and President of Beginnings of Palm Beach County and is the former chair of the accreditation policy board of the National Association for Child Care Professionals.

She is active in civic and community organizations including serving as a director on the board of Place of Hope, a child welfare and foster care program. From 1984 to 1996 she served on the board of Roberts Wesleyan College, which named her to its Hall of Fame in 1995.  She is a member of Phi Kappa Phi, Kappa Delta Pi, and the National Association for Early Learning Leaders. In 1998, Leighan received the Champion of Higher Independent Education in Florida" award.  She is currently the Vice Chair of the Board of the M.E. Rinker Sr. Foundation, Chair of the Board of the David and Leighan Rinker Foundation, and Vice Chair of the Board of Paradox Properties.

Leighan and her husband have four children, three of whom are Furman graduates, and 14 grandchildren, one is a Furman graduate and two are current Furman students.
