Kelsey Milian was raised in Miami, Florida. With a strong sense of cultural identity she has been able to connect and trace her heritage with her Mexican, Guatemalan, Aztec, Zapotec, K’iche Maya, French, German, Spanish, and Japanese roots. She is currently majoring in Sociology and Non- Teaching Education at the Liberal Arts Institution Furman University in Greenville, South Carolina.

Kelsey began playing violin when she was nine years old and participates in Furman University’s Symphony Orchestra. She is also a member of Furman's Student Diversity Council and HOLA.

She is finishing her sociology degree and now implementing an educational component to analyze and advocate for more implementation of arts programs in public schools. As a dedicated social activist for her heritage and people, she believes all children should have access to equitable education, this including strong arts programs and extracurriculars no matter what race, ethnicity, socioeconomic status, gender, sexuality, disability, and immigration status.

In her own words...

"Engaged learning is important because of the opportunities to connect on am empathetic level to all the people and organizations students at Furman can participate in. I am a strong advocate for Asset based community development and Engaged Learning is the perfect component of being able to share experiences and create social change across campus."
