Chief John Milby joined the Furman University Police Department in 2015. Before that, he worked for the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office for 25 years before retiring as captain over the Criminal Investigation Division. While with the Sheriff’s Office, Milby was privileged to serve in a variety of roles, including field training officer, SWAT team member, deputy coroner and jail division commander. In 2010, he attended the 242nd Session of the FBI National Academy in Quantico, Virginia.

Milby holds a bachelor’s degree in management from American Public University. He is a graduate of the Naval Postgraduate School, where he earned a master’s degree in homeland defense and security. While at Naval Postgraduate School, he received the Outstanding Thesis Award from the Center for Homeland Defense and Security for his thesis, “Preempting Mass Murder: Improving Law Enforcement Risk Assessments of Persons with Mental Illness.
