John is a 1975 graduate of Furman University and a former Furman University Trustee.

After a brief stint in banking, John ventured into broadcasting with Cox Enterprises. He soon took a more entrepreneurial route with a small three-station radio group, which over the course of fifteen years, grew to be the largest (by station count) radio company in the world.

Within that organization he was CEO of Gulfstar Communications, Chief Operating Officer of Capstar Broadcasting (NYSE:CRB), President of AMFM New Media (NYSE:AMF) and President of Clear Channel International.

Leaving broadcasting in 2004, John joined Capstar Partners, an Austin, Texas-based private equity firm. While in that role, Capstar acquired, built and subsequently sold DMX Music. John served as CEO of DMX and, upon the sale, President of the acquiring company, Mood Media.  At Capstar, he also led the acquisition of Andrew Harper Travel & Hideaway Report and served as Managing Director of Andrew Harper until the company’s sale in 2019.

John is an avid collector and trader of vintage European automobiles and enjoys days on any golf course. He and his wife Ronda live in Austin as do his two daughters and their families. He is pleased to have his stepdaughter returning to Austin for her MPA studies at The University of Texas and his oldest granddaughter join the Furman Class of 2030.
