Ian started his career in higher education recreation with a wilderness pre-orientation program at Towson University. After spending his undergraduate years working and volunteering for Campus Recreation, he went on to pursue his graduate degree on the banks of Lake Geneva, WI. While there, he completed a graduate assistantship where he facilitated a high and low ropes challenge course managing diverse groups of people through prescribed outcomes. After a brief internship at Rice University, he went onto build an outdoor recreation program from scratch at Angelo State University. In addition to building a successful outdoor program, he met his wife and had their first child. He also served on the Board of Directors for the Association of Outdoor Recreation and Education.

Ian then went onto broaden his recreation experience in South Texas at Texas A&M University-Kingsville where he was the Director of Rec. Sports. While there, he managed multiple areas including intramurals, cheer, and built a growing esports program. In 2021, he welcomed his second child. When the opportunity at Furman became open that would move him significantly closer to family, he seized it and started in August of 2022.
