Furman University celebrated the 1965 enrollment of the first African American student at the university by creating an annual observance in his honor. The inaugural Joseph Vaughn Day took place Jan. 29 and drew hundreds from the community to campus. On the occasion, the Greenville Journal spoke to Furman English major Adare Smith ’20, and Vaughn family member, Marcus Tate ’12.
