Briggs v. Elliott and its legacy in South Carolina
Delia B. Allen, a research associate at Furman’s Riley Institute, has published a paper in the Peabody Journal of Education. She examines the underpinnings of the more familiar 1954 landmark U.S. Supreme Court decision in Brown vs. Board of Education of Topeka that struck down separate but equal facilities for segregated schoolchildren. Allen says state’s first school funding lawsuit, Briggs vs. Elliott, in Summerton, South Carolina, heralded the Brown case. Read the abstract in Taylor & Francis Online. Access to the full paper is fee-based.
Allen serves as a research associate in the Center for Education Policy and Leadership at the Riley Institute.
