Colleges replace plastic straws with paper

Before Furman’s move to replace plastic straws with paper ones in 2017, the university was tearing through about 22,000 straws per month–a fraction of the 500 million straws used each day in America. University Business reports on campuses that are moving to more sustainable dining hall practices. Bon Appetit Management Company, dining services provider for Furman and other colleges, will phase out plastic straws companywide by 2019. Weston Dripps, executive director of Furman’s David E. Shi Center for Sustainability, is quoted in the article.
