Undergraduate research drives science forward
It’s generally understood that research at undergraduate colleges and universities helps students build critical thinking skills, fosters a foundation for the scientific process, and creates hands-on classroom experiences. And while these are true outcomes, the contribution that research at undergraduate institutions makes to the advancement of scientific knowledge is often undervalued. Furman Vice President for Academic Affairs and Provost George Shields co-authored a piece for University Business magazine that makes a strong case for undergraduate research.
