Among the myriad events commemorating last year’s tragedy in Charleston is “Requiem for Mother Emanuel,” a powerful exhibit of batik paintings by Orangeburg resident and renowned artist Leo Twiggs on display through the end of this month. In a column for The Times and Democrat in Orangeburg, Furman history professor Courtney Tollison Hartness writes about the African-American artist whose work has been called prophetic.
