A new class of Phi Beta Kappa National Honor Society was inducted on April 21. The ceremony for the 61 initiates was held in the Watkins Room of the Trone Center and was followed by a reception and an inspiring toast by Faculty Council Chair and Phi Beta Kappa member Brandon Inabinet.

A highly selective honor society for students receiving a liberal arts education, there are approximately 290 chapters at undergraduate institutions nationwide and only five chapters in South Carolina. Furman University’s Gamma chapter was founded in 1973 and initiated its first members in the spring of 1974; today, our chapter includes more than 60 faculty and staff members, including president Nathan Brown, vice president Eunice Kim, treasurer Glen Halva-Neubauer, secretary Tim Helwig, and historian Liz Bouzarth.

Students are considered for election based on their scholarly achievements in the liberal arts and sciences, broad cultural interests, and good character. Students exemplifying the qualities and intellectual pursuits of Phi Beta Kappa are invited to join the society during the spring of their senior year, but a small number of members of the junior class may also be invited. This year’s outstanding inductees are listed below.
