Gospel singer-songwriter Rudy Currence ’02 gives back to alma mater
On Aug. 29, Rudy Currence, a 2002 Furman University music alumnus and Gospel singer-songwriter, paid a visit to his Rock Hill, South Carolina, alma mater, Northwestern High School. The school welcomed students to a new academic year themed “You Belong Here,” a nod to Currence’s “I Belong Here,” which topped Billboard’s Gospel chart in 2021. The Post and Courier York County covered the celebration that included words of encouragement and music from Currence, a Grammy and Dove Award-winning producer, Grammy-nominated writer and two-time #1 Billboard recording artist.
“Never give up,” he told students gathered in the gymnasium. “This is decades in the making and a lifelong journey. I’m grateful for the highs and lows. If people could take anything from my story, it’s that I’ve been faithful, I’ve persevered and I’m passionate in what I’m purposed to do.”
