Furman University’s Ken Kolb, chair and professor of the Department of Sociology, pushes back on a raft of defunding measures led by Sen. Ted Cruz that target social science research. In The Post and Courier, he writes an op-ed that lays out the folly in the Senate Commerce Committee’s move to rescind 28 research grants set to bring $19 million to South Carolina in the coming months, and more broadly, a halt to finding “answers to real and pressing problems.” Kolb added, “The loss of economic investment in the state is only part of the problem. When the government restricts what can be learned from the facts, we all suffer.”
