Furman University’s Brent Nelsen joined FOX Carolina News anchors to reflect on the life of the late Jimmy Carter. Nelsen, the Jane Fishburne Hipp Professor of Politics and International Affairs, spoke about Carter’s rise to the presidency as an “outsider” from South Georgia. Nelsen commented on Carter’s legacy following his tenure in office, marked by his work to promote free and fair elections around the world and his involvement building homes for the poor – “using his fame to help other people,” Nelsen said. Nelsen also remarked on the importance of rituals that honor U.S. leaders to “bring the country together” and refocus attention on the nation, the Constitution and the office of the presidency.
