The high in Greenville, South Carolina, on April 25 was a lower-than-average 64 degrees under overcast skies. Perfect weather, in other words, for a quick swim.
For seniors at Furman, fountain-hopping on the last day of class has been a tradition for years, and the Class of 2023 gamely continued it despite the chilly water. This year’s LDOC celebration on Milford Mall and Joseph Vaughn Plaza also included a food truck and mac and cheese bar; circus performers; tote bags with DIY decorations; and an Elvis impersonator. Casino games, a photo booth and a Furman Plinko game were set up at Trone Student Center, where students also signed a giant thank-you card for the university’s Dins Day supporters.
“It’s intended to be a fun, accessible event that students can drop by between classes or hang out for a longer period of time,” said Jessica M. Berkey-Barnes, associate dean of student involvement and engagement, who also noted that the Furman University Student Activities Board (FUSAB) sponsored most of the activities (although the fountain-hopping remains a technically unsanctioned tradition). “It looks slightly different each year, but the goal is and continues to be celebrating the last day of classes.”
