It’ll be the Dins against the Cavs.

On Thursday, March 16, the 13th-seeded Furman team will meet fourth-seeded University of Virginia in the first round of the 2023 NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament at the Amway Center in Orlando, Florida. It will be Furman’s first March Madness appearance in more than 40 years.

Furman University basketball players wait in anticipation to hear their placement in the NCCA tournament as the selection show starts during a viewing at Timmons Arena on March 12, 2023.

A crowd of hundreds filled the stands of Timmons Arena in the evening of March 12 as the NCAA tournament brackets were revealed on CBS during Selection Sunday. The broadcast also checked in on the action as a sea of purple-clad fans reacted to the matchup announcement and celebrated the Paladins’ winning season. Many fans also got a chance to snap selfies with the Southern Conference championship trophy.

“Let’s keep this dance going for as long as we can,” Jason Donnelly, Furman’s vice president for intercollegiate athletics, told the crowd Sunday night.

Furman University President Elizabeth Davis continued the celebration, recalling cutting the net down after the Southern Conference championship game “one of the funnest things I’ve ever done.” Davis then showed off her custom Furman jersey emblazoned with the nickname the team had given her, “Lizzie D,” before exchanging high-fives with the players as the crowd erupted once more.
