Translations Colloquium Event: “Meet the Translator”

September 25, 2024 @ 12:00 pm - 1:30 pm

Trustees Dining Hall, lunch provided.

This event is part of the Furman Humanities Center (FHC) supported Translations Colloquium. It is meant to be a relaxing and low-key conversation on the experience of a translator, and on translation in general.

Our guest of honor is Emeritus Furman Professor Karni Bhati. Dr Bhati will read from his translations of the Gujarati poet, Gulammohammed Sheikh (born 1937). Sheikh’s poetry, like his paintings, have been highly influential in the avant garde scene in the literary and the visual arts in Gujarat, especially in the 1960s and 1970s. Some of the poems are ekphrastic, while others dwell on the poet’s experience of place and of language.

Dr. Bhati will offer us insight on his experience as a translator and will also read some readings of the poems. Handouts will be circulated during the event.

The event is open to Faculty, Students, and Staff. We will start gathering at 12 and will give people time to get their meal. You are more than welcome to join us for the whole event, or simply drop in when you have time. However, if you plan to join us for lunch, we ask you to briefly confirm your attendance to [email protected], so that we can budget for the right amount of lunch tickets.
