Building Readers: The Power of Meaningful Independent Reading

November 2 @ 4:00 pm - 5:00 pm
A teacher standing beside a young student who is reading a book.

In a world of increasing technology and information overload, students are often reading short pieces rather than whole books, while valuable classroom time is devoted to covering curriculum with limited opportunities for choice reading. We must reimagine how we create meaningful opportunities for students to read widely and deeply, work through challenging texts, build stamina and think critically.

Join us for a panel discussion as we explore ways to reimagine independent reading in the classroom. Together, we’ll consider what meaningful independent reading can look like, why it matters and how we can create reading experiences that engage students and help cultivate lifelong readers.

Moderator: Katie Kelly, Ph.D.

Panelists:

  • Marie Havran, Ed.D.
  • Amanda Barnes, M.Ed.
  • Cacey Miles, M.A.
