Student disengagement and lack of motivation are common challenges educators face across introductory to advanced courses and among all disciplines and course formats. As we work to address this universal difficulty, many question whether extrinsic motivators are effective at cultivating learning that will stick and if it is possible to activate the intrinsic interests of a group of diverse and unequally prepared students. Join Buket Oztas and Meghan Slining for this Talking Teaching session as they share insight from a recent short course they completed on intentional teaching and student motivation hosted by Intentional College Teaching. Following brief highlights of the central reflective and analytical frameworks the course provided to examine teaching practices, Buket and Meghan will guide participants through a discussion to consider practical opportunities to incorporate pedagogical strategies targeted at activating student motivation in courses or programs.
